Player notes: Bender was a Chippewa Indian who went to school at Carlisle with the legendary Jim Thorpe. He had an outstanding curve ball, and was known as a big game pitcher. He was a vital component of the great Athletics teams of the early 1910's that won World Series titles in 1910, 1911, and 1913, and won the American League title in 1914. This was also probably the first championship team to be intentionally dismantled, with Bender, Eddie Plank and Eddie Collins, among others, being shipped out after the 1914 season. The Athletics sunk to last place in 1915, and Bender enjoyed little success after that. He last pitched regularly in 1917, having returned to the A's. He made an unsuccessful attempt at a comeback in 1925. Still, Bender ranks as one of the greatest pitchers of baseball's early modern era.
